BACKGROUND

On October 3, 2003, Cardinal Pell appointed Auxiliary Bishop Julian Porteous as
Episcopal Vicar for Renewal and Evangelisation. The role was to be one of promotion of the New Evangelisation as encouraged by Pope John Paul II, and to foster "Authentic Church Renewal" within the Archdiocese.

CREDO Mission

CREDO sees its role within the Archdiocese of Sydney to be a key agency to further the strengthening of Catholic Life, by developing programmes of renewal, and spearheading works of evangelisation.

In particular, CREDO has as its goal, the engagement of the entire resources of the Archdiocese in a clear focus on evangelisation, taking up the challenge of Pope Paul VI’s statement in Evangelii Nuntiandi (n 14), “The Church exists in order to evangelise”.

CREDO Vision

We encourage every work of the Archdiocese to develop a self-understanding whereby it sees its place in proclaiming Christ and authentic Catholic teaching. Nothing less than this is envisaged as the work of this Office.

Goals - CREDO will:

• Increase the number of Parish Missions conducted in the Archdiocese, in order to continue to spread the experience of the New Evangelisation and to continue to engage and form seminarians and lay people in forms of evangelistic outreach.
  
  
• Create opportunities for existing groups and movements involved in evangelisation within the Archdiocese to work together in engaging more closely with the overall mission of the Archdiocese and encouraging greater co-operation with each other.
  
  
• Promote the notion of evangelisation, especaially the "New Evangelisation" espoused by Pope John Paul II, and to develop a collection of resources for evangelisation to assist parishes, and to offer training programmes in evangelisation.
  
  
• Initiate movements in the Archdiocese which focus on groups or individuals whom the Church is not actively engaging in its mission at this time. For instance, evangelising and forming Catholic men in a spirit of mission, and the formation of a "Guild" of Catholic artists to promote a Catholic spirit in the arts.
  
  
• Liaise with Catholic agencies within the Archdiocese to foster their Catholic ethos
